Perfect Love – Good News for September 14

14 09 2009

John 3:13-17

Jesus said to Nicodemus, “No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

The Daily Path: As you look into the eyes of a child, especially your own, it’s difficult to imagine how anyone could even consider sacrificing that beautiful being for the good of another. I don’t know how Abraham could obey God when he was asked to sacrifice his only son. Somehow he loved God so much that he was willing to follow God’s command… even as it broke his heart.

Yet God did not ask of Abraham something that He himself was not willing to do. God offered up his only son, Jesus, not just to death, but to die a horrible death of unimaginable suffering, so that we could all be saved. That is a level of love that generally seems beyond the comprehension of most of us.

Would I have the strength to follow God’s will if asked to make such a sacrifice?

The concept seems impossible to such a flawed being like myself. Yet, I have seen miracles in my own life brought about through faith in Christ. God has not asked me to sacrifice my child, but He has asked me to live a more perfect life in sacrificing other things, By giving part of myself to assist another. He’s yet to ask anything of me that I’m not capable of. I think it is in this way that we, too, are called to follow His example.

Room to Chat: Lord, each day you ask us to offer up a small piece of ourselves. Send your Spirit to give us the vision to see these opportunities and the strength to follow your example.
