iHeart – Good News for June 16

16 06 2010

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

Jesus said to his disciples, “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your alms giving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them.  Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

“When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

The Daily Path: Someday Steve Jobs and the design team at Apple will develop a personal Tivo device that will record all of our movements for replay at a later time. Unfortunately for Steve and all holding Apple stock, this has already been brought to market. God has been doing it since the beginning of time. On the shelves of the Pearly Archives sit bizillions of life minutes from every one of his children. You see, a wifi transmitter is in every human heart. It sends a signal direct to God. He knows what’s in our heart every moment. He knows the love, the hurt, the anger, the joy, the sadness, the benevolence, the forgiveness, the hurt, sorrow, repentance, generosity… and everything else that we feel and do.

No earthly marketing of our deeds is needed, nor is any accepted. Only one judge matters and He already sees us. So SMILE!

With Understanding – Good News for June 3

4 06 2010

Mark 12:28-34

One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?”

Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, He is One and there is no other than he. And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.”

And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

The Daily Path: My apologies for missing yesterday’s GNTG posting. A very dear friend passed away on Wednesday evening… my trusty computer. The old Apple G5 left me to go to the Infinite Loop in the sky when its mother board died. I’ll miss it.

This was the computer that accompanied me during the first steps in my spiritual journey. It was in the wee hours of the morning when I couldn’t sleep, filled my anxiety and rage, that I first used it to read Scripture passages that I found online. Ultimately it was with the G5 that I started GNTG over 500 posts ago.

Ancient scribes used papyrus. Someday this technology will seem as obsolete as paper made of reeds, but one thing will endure… the Good News.

So long old friend. Thank you for helping me along the path. It will be some time before I can afford to replace you with a shiny new iMac, so for now, your towering remains can stay here at my desk and continue to look over my shoulder as I seek inspiration from the daily readings.

Get Off My Back! – Good News for April 30

30 04 2009

John 6:44-51

Jesus said to the crowds, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets:

They shall all be taught by God.

Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world.”

The Daily Path: Do you ever feel like the devil is riding your back? I guess it’s my week to do battle because there seems to be a hitchhiker who’s been tailing me since Monday. Maybe if I hit the brakes it will smash into my trunk for an ambulance ride back to hell.

Stan Doubtsall: “Ah ha! Martha, the cracker is finally admitting he’s possessed. Quick, Google “exorcisms” before the devil virus infects this old PC! Damn, I told you we should have bought an Apple.”

Sorry Stan. I just write what I feel along this journey. And right now it feels like the devil is messing with me. There’s only one defense and that’s a counter attack. Spending more time in pursuit of God. More bread from Jesus. Lord if you don’t mind, I’d like two loaves of your grace today. Please put a smile in my heart and infuse more faith, hope, charity, prudence, fortitude, temperance and justice in me.

I renounce you old satan… so get off my back!

Room to Chat: Lord Jesus, I know I’m not worthy to receive you but please just say the word and let the healing begin.
