Advent Day 1 – Good News for November 28

28 11 2010

Matthew 24: 37-44

Jesus said to his disciples, “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.

Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

The Daily Path: The first Sunday of Advent is here! Time to head to the mall and start shopping for… GOTCHA!

To help us prepare for the real Christmas, the birth of Our Lord, I’m going to provide a GNTG! Advent Calendar. Perhaps it will help remind us of the true purpose in these next 28 days. Maybe it will act as an aspirin to ease the headache that can be brought on by the holiday rush. It’s also my Christmas gift to all of you, my dear friends, who walk with me on the journey home to God.

ADVENT – Day One: Family

Reflect on a moment in your life when family brought JOY.

let go – Good News for November 12

12 11 2010

Luke 17:26-37

Jesus said to his disciples, “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man; they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

Similarly, as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building; on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all. So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day, someone who is on the housetop and whose belongings are in the house must not go down to get them, and likewise one in the field must not return to what was left behind.

Remember the wife of Lot. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it. I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left.”

They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.”

The Daily Path: How many times have we watched a movie in which one of the characters passes on certain safety only to go back into harm’s way trying to retrieve the treasure or something “valuable” they left behind? And what happens?

BANG! WHACK! AAAAAAAAAGH!

What will I do on that day when I know I have a choice? Like today, for example. I’ll have lots of choices to follow love or follow treasure. Will I be a grumpy old man, rigid in my ways, attacking everything that gets in the way of ME? Or will I let go and follow Christ?

What will it be? Fire and brimstone? Pillar of salt? Freddie Krueger? Or letting go on the only path home?

Speak, I Am Listening – Good News for January 18

18 01 2009

Samuel 3:3-19

Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was. The Lord called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am.  You called me.”

“I did not call you, “  Eli said.  “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep.

Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am, “ he said.  “You called me.” But Eli answered, “I did not call you, my son.  Go back to sleep.”

At that time Samuel was not familiar with the Lord, because the Lord had not revealed anything to him as yet. The Lord called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am.  You called me.”

Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the Lord came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Samuel grew up, and the Lord was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.

The Daily Path: Like Samuel’s experience, when God began to call my number again, I didn’t see it for what it was. No voices in the night that I could hear. In my case it was a series of events. Some I couldn’t ignore. Other events were very subtle. Most I missed and it’s only in hindsight that I can see how God was calling my name through what was happening in my life.

Most of us have heard the old phrase “God works in mysterious ways.” He does, and He “speaks” to us in countless ways. Open your minds to hear His call. Listen and let His words have an effect on your life.

Shhhh. He’s calling right now.

Room to Chat: Last night I watched a travel log featuring some magnificent regions in southern Spain. The hosts visited several ancient sites featuring magnificent gardens that are still lush to this day. These gardens were originally created so that both owner and visitor could find peaceful haven. Even through a television visit you could see these gardens were also intended as a place for spiritual renewal. Have you found your own garden for renewal?
