Payment – Good News for June 1

Mark 12:13-17

Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus to ensnare him in his speech. They came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion. You do not regard a person’s status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?”

Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at.” They brought one to him and he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”

They replied to him, “Caesar’s.”

So Jesus said to them, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

They were utterly amazed at him.

The Daily Path: From the second letter of St. Peter (3:18)…

Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

Tax Day Rush – Good News for April 16

16 04 2009

Luke 24:35-48

The disciples of Jesus recounted what had taken place along the way, and how they had come to recognize him in the breaking of bread.

While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them,”Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them.

He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

And he said to them,”Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”

The Daily Path: April 15 found many of us in the U.S. scrambling to complete our tax returns and give unto Caesar. As I was in line at the Post Office to ensure my filing was postmarked 4/15/09, I wondered how many people feel the same urgency to give unto God and meet His deadline? Which got me to thinking about my back taxes. If I die tonight will my account be current and stamped PAID TO GOD IN FULL?

We don’t know when our final due date is scheduled. If we did, the pews would be full every Sunday and lines to Reconciliation would be down the isles and out the door. So why do we wait? Remember, there are two things you can depend on in this life besides the promise of God. That’s your own death and having to pay taxes! With God there are no filing extensions. But the fine to be imposed is not the reason to give unto God. We should be doing it because we love Him and want to join Him in heaven.

Beat the last minute rush. Love and obey God now.

Room to Chat: Do you like baseball? I love it. Next time you watch a game, say little prayer every time the pitcher for the opposing team strikes out a batter on your team. Hey, look at it as a bonus. Praying puts a positive on a negative outcome!
