Love Redux – Good News for May 15

15 05 2009

John 15:12-17

Jesus said to his disciples, “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing.

I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.

This I command you: love one another.”

The Daily Path: I don’t know why on some occasions the Catholic Church will repeat the same Gospel on consecutive days. You may recall that yesterday we read almost the exact same passage from John 15.

Here’s what I think… with all the madness in today’s world, God wants us to be constantly reminded what Jesus tells us of love. As my good friend the Mad Advertising Czar would say: “It’s about getting eyeballs, man.”

Okay, God. Today we have a love redux to remind more people about the message.

“Love one another”

Start this morning in the Peet’s Coffee Line. The Unemployment line. The bridge toll line. The line to get in line. Hug your wife. Tell your kids you love them even though their crayons melted on your back seat. Shake hands with your adversary at work (there is more success to be gained in tandem than alone). Smile at the person you can’t stand to be around (that smile has amazing super power to bring behavioral change). But do all these things because you love God… and because Jesus has asked us to “Love one another.”

Room to Chat: Guys have a hard time demonstrating their love. Reflect on that.

Peace For Troubled Hearts – Good News for May 12

12 05 2009

John 14:27-31

Jesus said to his disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.

I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me, but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me.”

The Daily Path: “Do not let your heart be troubled or afraid.”

Anxiety and fear seem to be the topics of the day. Although worry appears to be everywhere and etched on many faces, these are not subjects that most of us feel comfortable sharing with others… especially men. Once again, let me share with you that it was a willingness to turn my worries over to God that changed my life dramatically. The anxiety was lifted. Fears that kept me awake at night were eased.

Jesus left the disciples His peace. The good news is that He left you that same peace if you believe in Him. This I know to be true.

Room to Chat: Have you considered talking to God about the anxiety in your life? Start with a simple hello and just see where it leads. You may be very surprised.

Lord, thank you for watching over Bill last night. The cancer surgery went well and now his healing can begin. Amazing things happen when we put our trust in You. AMEN!

Flip Your Switch – Good News for May 6

6 05 2009

John 12:44-50

Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me, and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me. I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness. And if anyone hears my words and does not observe them, I do not condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save the world.

Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words has something to judge him: the word that I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day, because I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So what I say, I say as the Father told me.”

The Daily Path: Good News To-Go! came about in response to a growing need for light in an existence that had become terribly dark. Many attempts to find light from a variety of sources delivered only temporary flickers. The Good News of Christ delivers the one light that never fails to shine when we reach for the on-switch. (NOTE: This is one instance when you can throw energy conservation out the window. Keep Christ’s light burning 24/7 in every room of your heart.)

Room to Chat: Turn the light on, today.
