Stirring the Flame – Good News for June 2

Mark 12:18-27

Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and put this question to him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.

Now there were seven brothers. The first married a woman and died, leaving no descendants. So the second brother married her and died, leaving no descendants, and the third likewise. And the seven left no descendants. Last of all the woman also died. At the resurrection when they arise whose wife will she be? For all seven had been married to her.”

Jesus said to them, “Are you not misled because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven.

As for the dead being raised, have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God told him, I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly misled.”

The Daily Path: From the second letter of St. Timothy (1:6-8) … I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the Gospel with the strength that comes from God.

The Daily Path: Sometimes Scripture offers more than just the spiritual. Do you know what a Sadducee is?

According to Wikipedia: The Sadducees were members of a Jewish sect and were rivals of the Pharisees (today’s Rabbinical Jews), founded in the second century BC. They ceased to exist sometime after the destruction of the second Temple in Jerusalem (Herod’s Temple). The Sadducees were an aristocratic group of high priests, Levites, associated with the leadership of the Temple.

Just what Jesus needed, another group of Pharisees! Come to think of it, consider all the modern day Sadducees who put us to the test every day.

Convenient Ignorance – Good News for April 26

26 04 2009

Acts 3:13-15

Peter said to the people, “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in Pilate’s presence when he had decided to release him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. The author of life you put to death but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses.

Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did; but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer. Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.”

The Daily Path: For years I allowed myself to live in intentional ignorance of the truth. It wasn’t convenient for me to open myself up to God. Religion wasn’t cool and I had to maintain my image as a hipster. I could find every excuse why I didn’t buy into the Catholic Church. As a matter of fact, the Church was my convenient excuse for perpetuating ignorance.

No friends, ignorance is not bliss. True bliss can only come from opening your mind and heart to God. Fortunately, I found some courage to remove a brick from the wall of ignorance and convenient untruth that I’d built up so high over many years. One brick enabled enough light to shine in, warm my heart and illuminate the truth.

Room to Chat: Lord, let your face shine on those who continue to hide from You.
