Up, Up, And Away – Good News for May 21

Acts 1:6-11

When they had gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

Mark 16:15-20

Jesus said to his disciples, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.

These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them
and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

The Daily Path: The original Superman! As a boy I would stare at the stained glass window in our church that depicted Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. Pondering this was far more engaging than the dull thunder I heard from the monsignor’s pulpit. I tried to imagine what it was like to have been there. “Did he float into space or fly?” “Could the Apostles actually see Jesus sitting in a chair with God the Father?” So many questions that my imagination would run with.

Despite all the miracles that the disciples were witness to, this last demonstration still must have been a jaw dropper.

Who knows? I may be here to witness His equally amazing return!

Room to Chat: Lord, grant me Super-vision today so that I can see more of your miracles going on around me.

Mark 16:15-20

Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.

Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere,
while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

The Daily Path: Today’s reading (from 1 Peter 5:5) is worth reflecting on… especially for me.

Beloved, Clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for:

God opposes the proud but bestows favor on the humble.

So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.

Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your brothers and sisters throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ Jesus will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little. To him be dominion forever. Amen.
