Our Demons – Good News for August 3

4 08 2010

Matthew 15:21-28

At that time Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not say a word in answer to her.

His disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

But the woman came and did him homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply,
“It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.”

She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

The Daily Path: How many of us are tormented by demons? I know am. We often think that our path is taken alone. But it’s not. There are many who walk along bearing the same burden. Yet we keep it hidden away feeling it’s better to suffer silently than open ourselves to shame. But even in our chosen silence we do not walk alone. The Master walks with us ready to ease the burden if we have faith.

The Trading Bell – Good News for February 20

20 02 2009

Mark 8:34-9:1

Jesus summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the Gospel will save it.

What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What could one give in exchange for his life? Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

He also said to them, “Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the Kingdom of God has come in power.

The Daily Path: This morning, Jesus spoke at the New York Stock Exchange. There was absolute silence on the trading floor…

How would that scenario play out? Would the silence penetrate hearts? Would it be a catalyst for real change? Or would the opening bell ring and the frenzy begin again… with the words of Jesus laying crumpled on the floor under so many feet?

The analogy of Wall Street keeps the message at arms length… but the problem is right here in my life, too. I get caught up in the world. In possessions. In the greed of ME. And don’t be fooled. You can be just as greedy living in poverty as you can dashing about the country club.

I don’t want to be ashamed of God, nor do I want God to be ashamed of me. This is why I have to keep reminders of Him in my life  throughout the day. If I don’t… the trading floor frenzy will return and replace the silence.

Room to Chat: Today might be a good day to reflect on where greed has created a wound in our life.   Lord heal these wounds and make us whole again.
