Entry at the Gate – Good News for October 27

St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians 6:1-4

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother. This is the first commandment with a promise, that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on earth. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up with the training and instruction of the Lord.

Luke 13:22-30

Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’ Then he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!

And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the Kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

The Daily Path: Here’s an excerpt from a conversation overheard at the gate:

But… but… we went to church every Sunday.”

“In between?”

“You mean there was more to it than just showing up?”

Asking – Good News for July 25

25 07 2010

Luke 11:1-13

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.”

And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,’ and he says in reply from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.‘ I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.

“And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake
when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

The Daily Path: Today is Sunday. It’s a good day to knock.

Room to Chat: Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.

Timing – Good News for May 30

John 16:12-15

Jesus said to his disciples, “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.

He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”

The Daily Path: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.”

Have you given any thought the to the timeframe associated with your spiritual journey?

If your own path has been anything like mine then you’ve experienced a gradual spiritual awakening over time. Several years ago I would not have believed that I could feel the presence of God in my life the way I do today. It’s very likely that I would have rejected the notion outright had it been presented to me. In those days I would not have been able to bear all of what God has since opened my mind and heart to. It would have been wasted, just as if He revealed the “much more” to me on this 30th day of May, 2010. But a year from today, I will understand more than I do right now. In the days ahead the Spirit will help me to access more of the grace within.

Today is Sunday. Where will you look for the Spirit?

Revelations 21:5

The One who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

John 13: 31-35

When Judas had left them, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and God will glorify him at once.

My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

The Daily Path: Is today the day that all things in your life will be made new? I’m finding that every day holds that possibility. In fact, I’m enjoying many new things that have begun popping into my life. It’s the One at work. Open yourself up to some “new”.

It’s Sunday. Go find some love, and when you do… share it.
