Come Down – Good News for November 16

Luke 19:1-10

At that time Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.

When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy.

When they saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”

The Daily Path: Insert your name in the following…

(Your name) come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And (your name) came down quickly and received him with joy.

Touchdown Jesus – Good News for January 26

St. Paul’s Letter to Timothy 1: 7

For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the Gospel with the strength that comes from God.

The Daily Path: How often do “the guys” sit around and talk about God in their lives?  It’s easy to talk about a defensive lineman crushing a quarterback. Not so easy to share how God has made a difference in you. When was the last time someone shook your hand in a sports bar and said “Nice to meet you. I’m Catholic. How about you?”

Maybe they do at Notre Dame. “Remember Zacchaeus? Yeah, he was a little dude, but man, that cat could run. 4.3 at the Galilee Scouting Combine.”

Room to Chat: As you do the laundry this week, ask Jesus if it was easier running around with no socks.

“Hey, you up in the tree!” – Good News for November 18

Luke 19: 1-10

At that time Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was, but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.

When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.”  And he came down quickly and received him with joy.

When they saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”  But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.”

And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”

The Daily Path: Are you hiding in the tree like our little man Zacchaeus? Let me guess… you don’t want to get too close so you’re taking a look from afar. What are you afraid of? Some grumbling from the crowd? Yes, you might get some of that. So what? Sticks and stones…

I know that I’m probably going to hear something from people I consider friends once they find my Good News To Go! blog. Some will think it’s pretty cool… as a few already have. Others will grumble that I’ve become a holy roller. Oh well. My relationship with God has made a difference in my life. That’s all that matters. Let them grumble.

Careful, my friends. If you stay up in that tree, you know who is ready to call you out. Next thing you know, you’ll be sharing a meal with Jesus. Table for two?
